At Lovett Dental Meyerland Plaza, we want to ensure that everyone takes care of their oral health. That is why we recommend that everyone come to visit us at least twice per year for regular cleanings. At the same time, we understand that acute concerns might arise. There are some cases where tooth extraction might be required. We can perform this procedure at all of our offices; however, we also want to make sure that everyone understands exactly what will happen. Let us guide you through the process to set your mind at ease and get the dental treatment you need.

Planning for a Tooth Extractionmodel shoes the process of a tooth extraction

We value our patients’ teeth. Therefore, we will only recommend tooth removal or teeth extractions if we believe they are necessary. Usually, we remove teeth if there is widespread tooth decay or if the jaw is too crowded. Untreated cavities and gum disease can both contribute to tooth loss.

If we believe that tooth extraction is necessary, we may take images to make sure that we understand the exact degree to which tooth decay might be a problem. Then, we will also plan our approach, decide how many teeth we need to remove, and how we will remove them. We can perform a simple extraction in some cases, using nothing more than an elevator and some four steps to remove the tooth. In other cases, such as wisdom teeth removal, this may require surgical extraction.

We will make sure that we answer all of your questions before the procedure takes place. We want to make sure that you are as comfortable as possible.

The Day of the Procedure

On the day of the procedure, we will need your help to make sure that you are ready for the extraction. Some of the points to keep in mind include:

  • Even though you should have white smoking as a general rule, you should absolutely stop smoking for a couple of weeks before the procedure, as this can inhibit the healing process.
  • If you are going to be receiving IV anesthesia, make sure that you wear short sleeves or loose clothing so that we can access your arm easily.
  • Should you experience any infection symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, or fever, we may need to reschedule the procedure.
  • If you are going to be receiving general anesthesia, you need to make sure that you have someone who can drive you home.

After this, you will arrive at our office, we will answer any last-minute questions you might have, and we will complete the procedure.

Options To Replace Missing Teeth

If you have undergone tooth extractions or tooth removal, there are options for us to replace your missing teeth. One of the most popular options that we offer is a dental implant. A dental implant functions just like a native tooth. Using a screw placed in the jaw and a dental cap, we can restore your smile while allowing you to eat a regular diet. We would be happy to talk with you about all of the options we have when replacing missing teeth.
